Greetings from Kokoro no Gakko! It’s registration time! We are very excited for the upcoming program and look forward to having returning and new families join us for the 2017 season. Please read through all of the information below, which includes important details and dates.
School Dates: June 26, 2017 through July 7, 2017. There is no school on Tuesday, July 4th.
Location: Watsonville Buddhist Temple, 423 Bridge Street, Watsonville.
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday.
Gakko is available for children who have completed kindergarten (by June 2017) through the 6th grade.
Tuition is $225.00 per student and is non-refundable once the child has been admitted even if the child does not attend. (There may be additional costs for materials.)
How to register: Please fill out the registration packet completely during the enrollment period listed below for priority. The registration packet can be filled out electronically or printed and returned by mail. If you fill out electronically do not forget to send tuition payment. (Check payable to: Kokoro no Gakko)
Printed forms and payments can be mailed to: Kokoro no Gakko, c/o Akiko Minami, P.O. Box 2063, Freedom, CA 95019. Questions may be sent to Akiko Minami at firstname.lastname@example.org.
First Enrollment Period: February 1, 2017
Our first enrollment period will be for returning families (those families whose child attended the 2016 Gakko school year) and board members’ families. All qualified returning families must apply for admission of their child(ren).
Children who will complete kindergarten by June 2017 and have siblings who attended the 2016 Gakko Program, in good standing, may enroll during the first enrollment period. If enrollment of continuing families for kindergarten exceeds classroom size, the application date will determine eligibility. If the application date does not eliminate contention, the Board Committee will hold a lottery.
Open Enrollment Begins: February 15, 2017
The open enrollment period for new families will begin on February 15, 2017 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications that are incomplete will not be considered registered until completed.
A waiting list will be established, if necessary, and will apply only to applications for the 2017 program.
It is the policy of Gakko to place your child in the class level that they have completed by June 2017. Children must have completed kindergarten by June 2017 to be considered for enrollment, no exceptions. This guideline enables Gakko registration to be completed without further review or delay.
When completing your application, please be sure to include an email address you check frequently. This will be one of the primary methods of correspondence between you and Gakko. We will forward literature and orientation materials in the coming months to those who have been accepted. Also, follow us on Facebook to stay up to date on what’s happening at Gakko!
This special summer program is a parent co-operative that is governed by a parent-volunteer Board of Directors. All parents are required to participate fully in the program and on committees to maintain the quality of the program for our children. Registrations will be held if service hours have not been completed for prior year. We thank you in advance for your support! Kokoro no Gakko exists because of your dedication. Commitments include:
* #1 Committee Requirements
Each family is required to serve on one committee. It is the Committee’s responsibility to work together and fulfill the tasks outlined under “Committee Form” in the registration packet. Committee options include:
- Salad preparation, selling, and clean-up for the Hanamatsuri Festival (April 9, 2017) and Obon Festival (July 16, 2017). Times TBD.
- Instructional Materials
- Prepare materials for student projects – 3 days before or during the program
- Food & Hospitality

* #2 Classroom Work Days
Each family is required to work in the classroom: one day for each child. “Family” is defined as the child’s parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and adult family friends as those who can work in the classroom. If a family member cannot work, the parents are required to find someone to substitute for them. The work hours are from 8:45-12:30. The duties are to assist the teachers and staff, work with the children, supervise at recess, help resource specialists, clean facilities as described on the child’s classroom door and support various other activities for the operation of Gakko.
* #3 Community Service Day
The Watsonville Buddhist Temple generously supports Gakko with a reduced facility fee and volunteer specialists. We maintain this special relationship by asking Gakko families to lend a helping hand to one of the Temple’s two major events:
~ The Obon Festival setup (July 16, 2017)
~ Chicken Teriyaki Fundraiser (September 23, 2017)
* #4 Farmer’s Market Donation
As part of our fundraising efforts, each family is responsible for bringing items to sell at our daily Farmer’s Market on your assigned class day.
* Snack Day for Teachers and Volunteers
To keep our program fueled and energized, we ask each family to bring a snack on their assigned class day for our teachers and volunteers generously providing their time during this program.
* Selling Raffle Tickets for Open House
All families will be issued raffle tickets to sell for the open house, which will take place on the evening of the last day of the program.
If you feel your child has a special need that you would like the Gakko staff to be aware of, let us know. Please note any restrictions, allergies or any other critical medical information.
Kokoro no Gakko ~ Thank you!!!!
