Greetings from Kokoro no Gakko! We are very excited for the upcoming program and look forward to having returning and new families join us for the 2018 season. Please read through all of the information below, which includes important details and dates.
School Dates: June 25 through July 6, 2018. There is no school on July 4th.
Location: Watsonville Buddhist Temple, 423 Bridge Street, Watsonville
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday
Ages: Gakko is available for children who have completed kindergarten (by June 2018) through the 6th grade. Your child should be registered in the class level that they will have completed by June 2018. For example, if your child will complete kindergarten by June 2018, they should be registered in the Gakko kindergarten class.
Tuition: $275.00 per student; non-refundable once the child has been admitted even if the child does not attend. We encourage families to take advantage of our early-enrollment discount: tuition is only $250 per student if registration AND payment is received by March 15, 2018!
We have daily cleaning needs during the program and are willing to further discount or waive registration fees for a family or team of families that are willing and able to take on these responsibilities. If interested contact: email@example.com
Returning Family Enrollment Period: February 5–28, 2018. Our first enrollment period will be for returning families (those families whose child attended Gakko in 2017) and Board of Directors’ families. All qualified returning families must apply for admission of their child(ren). Children who will complete kindergarten by June 2018 and have siblings who attended Gakko in 2017, in good standing, may enroll during the returning family enrollment period.
Open Enrollment: March 1 through April 30, 2018. The open enrollment period for all families is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications that are incomplete will not be considered registered until completed. There is a $25 early-enrollment discount if registration and payment are received by March 15, 2018!
Waiting List: There are 10 students in each Gakko class. If enrollment in a particular class exceeds classroom size, registration application date will be used to prioritize enrollment and establish a waiting list, if necessary.
Family Commitments: This special summer program is a parent co-operative that is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. All families are required to participate fully in the program and on committees to maintain the quality of the program for our children. “Family” is defined as the child’s parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and adult family friends. Registrations will be held if service hours have not been completed for prior year.
“New family” orientations will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2018, from 11:30–12:00 and 12:00–12:30. For all families, Watsonville Buddhist Temple rules and volunteer guidelines will be distributed prior to the start of Gakko.

#2 Gakko Work and Snack Day(s)
Each family is required to work at Gakko one day for each child. If a family member cannot work, the parents are required to find someone to substitute for them. The work hours are 8:45-12:30. The duties are to assist the teachers and staff, work with the children, supervise at recess, help resource specialists, clean facilities as described on the child’s classroom door and support various other activities for the operation of Gakko. As such, you may or may not be assigned to work in your child’s classroom on your work day. Some classrooms do not need a family helper each day, and there are many other things that need to get done to keep Gakko running smoothly, such as kitchen and bathroom cleaning, activity prep, etc. To keep our program fueled and energized, we ask each family to bring a snack on their classroom work day for our teachers and volunteers generously providing their time during this program. On-line sign-ups for classroom work days and the kind of snack you will bring are available approximately one month before Gakko begins and will be advertised via email and this website under F.A.Q.
#3 Community Service Day
The Watsonville Buddhist Temple generously supports Gakko with a reduced facility fee and volunteer specialists. We maintain this special relationship by asking Gakko families to lend a helping hand to one of the Temple’s two major events. You indicate your preferred community service day on the registration form.
Obon Festival setup (July 2018)
Chicken Teriyaki Fundraiser (September 2018)
#4 Farmer’s Market Donation
As part of our fundraising efforts, each family is responsible for bringing items to sell at our daily Farmer’s Market according to grade. Donations may include purchased or homemade baked goods and snacks, produce, smaller arts and craft. Donation ideas can be found under F.A.Q and donation dates are on the grade-specific web pages.
#5 Selling Raffle Tickets for Open House
All families will be issued raffle tickets to sell for the open house, which will take place on the evening of the last day of the program.
